The sellers have accepted our offer on their house, so over the course of the next couple of months we’ll be moving, then selling this place. Having begun dismantling and packing the contents of the Basement Shop, Laboratory, and Warehouse, my blog-worthy activities will grind to a temporary halt.
Should you or anyone you know be interested in moving to the trendy Hudson Valley region, we have a conveniently located property with a shop-ready basement:

Maybe we can make a deal …

Congratulations!
Congrats to you and Mary on the new house, and best of luck with the packing and move. Having done it a few years ago I’ll just say it’s an experience…
We’ve been here nigh onto a quarter century, so we’re definitely out of practice with packing. Some (light & delicate) stuff I must haul by myself!
Our goal, after 28 years living in the same place, was:
When packing, at least half of the boxes go to donation, recycle, or trash.
Same thing when unpacking.
Congratulations on the new house. What part of the country got chosen?
Re boxes of stuff and weeding thereof, that leads to the dual problems:
A) Where’s that thing? Did it get tossed?
B) Why did this thing come along?
With respect to “B”, I’m using an audio mixer to replace the stereo preamp that replaced the 1979 vintage (and already been repaired) preamp. The mixer has been idle for over 25 years, but seems in good shape. When I feel courageous, I’ll power up the ancient 1MHz HP oscilloscope. Not sure of its age, but I used the same model 50 years ago…
FWIW, the older preamp lost the phono section 20 years ago, and I was able to make a new board to replace the potted mess. I have to figure out the pinouts on the main amp, though one channel still works. I hate potted circuits.
The newer preamp was allergic to cold temps (38F in the winter in the shop), but it lost almost all of its gain this fall. The first part the the amp is OK, but anything past Tape Out is bad. I need the round tuit (and a working O-scope) to figure it out. Have one the the kits for a portable Oscillocsope.
Oddly, we’re moving a couple of miles northward. The benefits include shedding some property maintenance and gaining some home improvements, so it seems like a Good Idea™.
Fortunately, most of the stuff in the Basement Warehouse Wing is already boxed & labeled. I must capture & strong-arm the loose widgets into some kind of wrap, then box them similarly. And labels. Must. Remember. Labels.
That’s harsh, but we’ve decided no trash can shall go to the road unstuffed.
A while back I had a real estate agent tell me that my beautiful workshop in the basement added no value to the price of my house because most buyers looking at houses in my general price range have no DIY skills. Probably true but sad.
My workbenches are definitely coming with me! Not only do they have holes in all the right places, but their plywood & lumber has appreciated so much it’s cheaper to move them.
I know about precious metals, but precious wood?
After seeing the costs of OSB during the Great Covidiocy shutdown, I agree that wood can be pretty precious. As memory serves, 7/16″ OSB was going for about 5X at peak over the previous prices. It’s down, mercifully, but still rather higher than before.
The shop/barn has a built-in bench, but the one that followed me from California has become my assembly table for larger projects.
Congrats and all the best in your new home Ed. I after 45 years am moving out and relocated to my coffee farm. I have time till the month end.
IIRC, you will now have time to watch the peacocks in your yard, just as we watch our turkeys.
Maybe we could arrange a swap?
Safe travels! Moving is my absolute least favorite of anything ever. Which is why I live on a boat now … why move house when you can just move your house?
And you can pour money into the same place, wherever it is!
