I vaguely recall similar errors in Ubuntu’s updater and I suppose everybody gets it wrong occasionally.

I guess it’s not helpful for people who have already been afflicted, but maybe for people who are catching up, if you manage to get both updates at the same time it all works out?
Apparently MS pulled the offending update a few days (?) after it emerged, so if you run Windows as infrequently as I do, there wasn’t a problem.
If your PC automatically installed the first one, I don’t know how you’d dig yourself from that hole, because you might never even notice the PC isn’t getting updated…
Not sure how they worked it, but the problematic one got installed on 12/10 in my machine, while the one to unscrew it managed to get installed 12/12. I suspect MS has ways… (FWIW, I manually start the search and load for the updates–the jiggered one might have affected the fully automagic search and
destroyload update process.)
