Getting More Clearance While Bicycling: Fluids Division

Based on recent experience, this “Baby, Think It Over” rig works even better than a propane tank:

Tour Easy BOB Yak - Gasoline can
Tour Easy BOB Yak – Gasoline can

I was going to take a picture with it posed next to the gas pump, but the whole affair isn’t all that stable: it’s tough to look cool when your fancy faired Tour Easy ‘bent flops over like dead possum…

That is quite the setup! It could be probably use center stand. Any running lights, strobes, or LEDs for low light conditions or just plain bedazzlement?

      center stand

The good folks at Easy Racers talked me out of the center stand they sell, saying that the best-case failure (when some innocent bystander sits on the seat) involves bending the stand legs. The worst-case failure bends the bike’s frame tubes…

If it weren’t for that little issue, I’d definitely have one, because the bike really wants to fall over.

      just plain bedazzlement

There’s a Planet Bike blinky on the rear seat frame, up near the antenna mount. It’s bright, but very directional, and I’ll eventually replace it with a Hall effect current sensor LED blinky that should be visible from low earth orbit.

Up front, there’s an old Nashbar five LED white blinky when I’m on the rail trail. On the road, I figure it’s my responsibility to avoid ramming things.

The Hall sensor LED blinky will have two outputs, one for a big block of red LEDs to the rear and another for two smaller amber arrays in the front. I foresee numerous 3D printed enclosures in my future…

All those LEDs, that’s why it’s so heavy! ;-)

          Nah, it’s the batteries!

Actually, it’s the tools. I carry enough tools to recover from nearly anything: I can’t help it, I’m just that type of guy.

Seems like a perfect place for a pair of hydraulic struts!

I like to have a forward light at night because it helps prevent unexpected left turns across my path.

The more I look like a UFO at night, the fewer close calls I have…

Come to think of it, looking like a UFO in daylight probably helps, too. [grin]

Turn the gas can into a tool box & Battery holder. Cut off the top section, sleeve it so it slides back into the bottom section stealthily. Clearance and utility :)

Reminds me of the scene in Niven’s The Deadlier Weapon where the hitchhiker with a gas can and a cigar gets in the protagonist’s car, then tips the cigar into the can… which isn’t full of gas, of course.
